Bank of Maldives Selects Finastra Essence for Core Banking…

Finastra has secured a core banking transformation project with the Bank of Maldives, as the country’s largest commercial bank moves to modernize its technology infrastructure and accelerate digital banking services across both conventional and Islamic banking operations.

The bank will deploy Finastra Essence as its new core banking platform, replacing legacy infrastructure with a more flexible system designed to speed up product launches, automate operational processes and improve customer service delivery.

For Finastra, the agreement adds another core banking deployment in the Asia-Pacific region as banks continue investing in next-generation platforms to support digital channels, open banking initiatives and increasingly complex regulatory requirements.

Core Banking Modernization Takes Center Stage

Core banking systems remain among the most critical pieces of technology within financial institutions, handling deposits, lending, payments, customer records and transaction processing. Many banks continue to operate platforms that were implemented decades ago, making digital transformation projects both expensive and strategically important.

By adopting Finastra Essence, Bank of Maldives aims to shorten the time required to introduce new financial products while improving operational efficiency through greater automation and straight-through processing.

The platform will also support the bank’s dual banking model, allowing it to continue offering both conventional and Sharia-compliant Islamic banking products from the same technology infrastructure.

“At Bank of Maldives, our strategy is anchored in continuous innovation and delivering lasting value to the customers and communities we serve,” said Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives.

“Our partnership with Finastra Essence represents a pivotal step in our digital transformation journey, providing the agile, future-ready foundation we need to accelerate innovation, drive operational excellence, and expand our ability to deliver world-class financial services to customers nationwide.”

Supporting Product Innovation And Customer Experience

According to Finastra, the implementation will enable Bank of Maldives to bring new products to market more quickly while giving relationship managers improved tools to serve retail and business customers.

The bank expects the new platform to streamline internal operations through increased automation and seamless processing across multiple banking functions, reducing manual intervention while improving service consistency.

Finastra said its open architecture was a key factor in the bank’s selection process, alongside the platform’s functionality, implementation capabilities and track record in core banking modernization projects.

“Bank of Maldives is a cornerstone institution in the country’s financial sector, and we are delighted to support its modernization journey,” said Siobhan Byron, Executive Vice President of Universal Banking at Finastra.

“The selection of Finastra Essence reflects the strength of our open, flexible core banking platform and our ability to help financial institutions innovate at pace, while maintaining resilience and operational excellence. We look forward to helping the bank achieve its ambitious growth and transformation objectives.”

Core Banking Replacements Continue Across Global Banking

The project reflects a wider trend across the banking industry, where financial institutions are replacing legacy core banking systems with cloud-ready, API-enabled platforms capable of supporting digital banking services and faster product development.

Rather than treating the core banking platform solely as a back-office transaction engine, banks increasingly view it as the foundation for mobile banking, digital onboarding, real-time payments, embedded finance and open banking initiatives.

Modern platforms also make it easier to integrate third-party fintech services through application programming interfaces, allowing banks to expand their product offerings without rebuilding their core infrastructure.

For institutions operating both conventional and Islamic banking businesses, technology flexibility has become increasingly important. Supporting multiple banking models within a single platform can simplify operations while ensuring compliance with the distinct rules governing Sharia-compliant financial products.

The Bank of Maldives selected Finastra Essence following an evaluation that considered functionality, technology architecture, platform flexibility, implementation capabilities and Finastra’s experience delivering large-scale banking transformation projects. The implementation is expected to provide the technology foundation for the bank’s long-term digital transformation strategy as it continues expanding banking services across the Maldives.
